March 1935.

H.M. Inspector’s Report on Maddiston Public School.

Session 1934-1935.

“ The Infant Department is under control of a teacher who combines efficiency with an enthusiasm for the methods she has adopted. Instruction in reading is bases mainly on the phonic system but the faults that are so often associated with this system are avoided, and a satisfactory measure of success is attending the endeavour to cultivate fluent speech and articulate enunciation. Finger-pointing should be discouraged as early as possible. A graduated course of concrete work in counting is in operation for the younger sections; at the higher stages, the pupils have made convincing progress in the mastery of addition and subtraction, in writing and in handwork.

Inspection of the Junior Division left a general impression of consistent and solid attainment in most branches of the curriculum. While addition and penmanship seem to be capable of improvement, reading and spelling reach a good average standard throughout, and class I(b) deserve credit for their ready and well-informed answering in history and geography. In the comprehensively taught senior division the slower pupils receive the attention to which they are entitled, Class II is the weakest and needs the special effort its present teacher is bringing to bear on it.

Written exercises in all four classes have been regularly set and carefully supervised, but, for the less able groups, some simplification or variation of the exercises in English Composition is recommended. The children speak well when reciting verse and have acquired a sound knowledge of the prescribed portions of history and geography.

The headmaster displays zeal and energy in controlling and testing the work of the classes.”

H.M.Inspector’s Report on Madditon Public School

Session 1927 – 1938

The general impression conveyed by the inspection of this school is that the headmaster and his staff have, by vigorous team-work and well directed effort, succeeded, in spite of difficulties which are by no means inconsiderable, in raising the general level of performance and improving the tone of the school. The problem of organisation is complicated by the fact that the children in the infant department are numerous enough to require classification in three groups instead of two, so that special provision for the promotion of pupils is necessary if many of them are not to spend three years in this department of the school. The arrangements made by the headmaster appear to be working well.

In spite of the staff changes and the absence, through illness of the infant mistress, who is a skilful teacher, the infant classes have made solid progress in all branches of their work. The mechanics of reading are being taught with commendable efficiency, and the wireless course in rhythmic work seems to be producing good results. It is suggested that a greater variety of suitable exercises in handwork might be undertaken in the higher infant classes.

The progress made in the three junior classes was found to be satisfactory. Painstaking and conscientious work on the part of the teachers had resulted in a rate of advance in reading, counting, writing, speech-training, and handwork that is creditable in a school of this type. The programmes are well adapted to the capacities of the children who have to undertake them, and the work has been carefully done.

In the senior classes there is ample evidence that the steady rate of progress noted in the infant and junior classes is being maintained. These classes have capable teachers, and it is clear that not only have the pupils secured a firm grip of the knowledge imparted to them but that much had been done to improve their speech and to give them skill in the use of the pen: The lessons in history and geography have obviously interested the children, and the number of those who were reading at home books which were not school books was noted with pleasure. In connection with the programme in arithmetic, it is suggested that abundant and frequent oral revision by way of oral questioning, especially such questions as make the children think about the processes to be used, should go pari passu with advance to new work. Wireless lessons are taken in music; speech-training, and occasionally history, and the pupils are encouraged to use the B.B.C. pamphlets.

The building is equipped with electric lighting, and has recently been redecorated both inside and outside.
